WikiGnome

A WikiWiki:WikiGnome works behind the scenes to tie up little loose ends, adding ISBNs of books that people mention, tracking down the authorship of "someone once said"-quotes, correcting WikiWiki:BrokenLinks, fixing WikiWiki:BrokenWhitespace, answering WikiWiki:AnswerMes, tirelessly replacing WikiWiki:ChatMode with content, fixing misspellings, and, when appropriate, making ordinary words into links. Sometimes a WikiWiki:WikiGnome takes on major projects, such as breaking down the barriers around WikiWiki:WalledGardens. -- From WikiWiki:WikiGnome, slightly edited

Here's some stuff that's usually needs some fixing on this particular wiki:

Categorizing

There are a bunch of pages on this wiki that list other pages in some specific category. On this wiki, we don't have a special naming scheme for those pages, but you'll recognize them when you see them. Every page that is linked to from such a page, should have a link at the bottom, below a horizontal bar, going back to the category page.

If you feel like gnoming, you can check each page linked to by a category page, seeing to that all those pages link back to the category page in the correct way.

You can also add free-floating pages to a category, if you find a suitable one, or create a new category, if you see the need for one.

Please note that the catagory pages aren't meant to represent a hierarchy of some kind. A page can belong to several categories, and some are simply loners. Some gnomes might come across AdminPages, while in the process.

Pages for outgoing links

If a certain page outside of the wiki is likely to be linked to in more than one place on the wiki, such as home pages for programs and the like, it's better to create a page for that program right away, which in turn contains a link to the actual page. That way, you wont have to search and replace on the whole wiki just because the URI changes. Also, it encourages people (or other gnomes) to add more (and hopefully ratpoison related) info on the program or whatever it is, on that page.

In particular, category pages shouldn't list outgoing links. If a topic belongs in a category, it is certainly also deserving of it's own page.
